Gautam Gambhir stepped down as captain of the Delhi Daredevils after a disastrous start to their campaign in IPL 2018.

Shreyas Iyer will lead Delhi for the remainder of the tournament.

Gambhir was not retained by Kolkata Knight Riders. As KKR skipper, he had led the side to two IPL titles.

In the player auction in January, Gambhir was bought by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 2.8 crore.

Gamhhir, who has 4217 runs from 154 IPL matches since 2008, has been in poor form this season. From six matches, Gambhir has scored only 85 runs at a strike rate of 96.59.

Iyer told the media he got to know of his appointment as DD skipper earlier today.

Gambhir said it was entirely his decision to step down as captain after his poor performance.

“It was my decision. I haven’t contributed enough to the team. I had to take the responsibility being the leader of the ship. I feel it was the right time,” Gambhir told the media on Wednesday.

Iyer finds himself in the hot seat in only his fourth IPL season. He debuted for DD in 2015 and scored 439 runs from 15 matches. After playing just six matches in 2016, he was a regular for DD in the playing XI, scoring 338 runs from 12 matches.

This year, he has been Delhi’s most consistent batsman, scoring 151 runs including two half-centuries from six matches.

“I want to thank the management & my coaches for appointing me as the captain of the team. It is a great honor for me,” he said.

On Monday, Delhi had failed to chase down a modest 144 in their own den at the Kotla against Kings XI Punjab.

Needing 144 to win, Delhi failed to build partnerships on regular intervals and ended up losing the match by four runs despite Shreyas Iyer’s valiant 45-ball 57.

Gambhir had slammed his batsmen for failing to hunt down a modest target.

“I thought in the first six overs when you lose three wickets, you let the opposition back in the game. We did score runs but also lost too many wickets. Our bowlers did really well to restrict them but we lost too many wickets in the first six and it’s always difficult when that happens,” he had said in the post-match press conference.

Delhi next play KKR at the Feroz Shah Kotla on April 27, Friday. Currently Delhi are languishing right at the bottom of the table with 2 points at net run rate of -1.097.
